Local artist and fellow CofC grad, Lulie Wallace is a favorite of curators and interior designers alike.  You’ve probably seen her work through collaborations with Anthropologie and Serena and Lily or in magazines such as Domino, Coastal Living, and the Land Of Nod. She was one of Charlie’s 50 Most Progressive in 2013. We are lucky to have such a talent right here- her local studio is at Redux Contemporary Art Center, plus she’s really cute and sweet!  Totally loving her idea of a dream dinner guest!

Favorite drink before noon?

My smoothie is one of my favorite parts of my morning routine! It includes kale, bananas, apples, pears, ginger,

carrots, cucumbers, apple juice, and whey protein powder… to me, it’s like getting to eat ice-cream for

breakfast!

Favorite drink at 6pm?

Sparkling water, there is nothing like hearing the fizz when you open a new can!

Wine: red, white or champagne?

Definitely champagne

Hors d’ouerve that is always in the cabinet or fridge?

Stacey’s pita chips and a speciality cheese from Whole Foods are my go to. Add some almonds and a jar of my

Dad’s honey to that mix and I’m all set!

Music go to when friends are over…. i.e. Pandora station?

Anything Motown

Where would you like to go on vacation?

I’m an incessant travel researcher, while I may not go so many places, I love researching a good trip. I grew up

with my mom being a travel agent, so I think it runs in the family! In the past few months, some of these places

include Iceland, Miami and Maine… they are all so different!

Favorite flower?

Orchids because they are exotic and I love that I can enjoy them for a long time!

Dream guest to have over for dinner?

Beyonce

Favorite restaurant?

Right now, Obstinate Daughter on Sullivan’s Island because I feel like I’m on vacation when I’m there!

And favorite thing to eat at this restaurant?

Their ricotta gnocchi with the short-rib ragu, is delicious

I know we have been seeing a popular resurgence in silhouettes for awhile now, but what I love about Patti Rishforth is what she is doing to come up with new and fun ways to do them. Patti also does amazing pencil sketches of children, animals, etc. We’ve had Patti on site for several of our events doing them live as a take away for guests.  And I just love story of how she got started…

“I was doing pencil portraits at children’s boutiques (live sittings in 45 minutes) before I knew I could do silhouettes. The owner of one boutique I frequented the most kept asking me to do silhouettes and I kept saying I didn’t know how. She kept insisting that if I could do portraits, I’d surely be able to do a silhouette and that she could fill the day with even more appointments. So I got some crisp paper and sharp scissors and practiced on my husband and 2 year old son. After doing 4 or 5, suddenly, it clicked! Like that moment when you finally learn how to use your two hands to play different notes on a piano instead of mirroring each other. It all just clicked into place and I knew I could do it! So I did more of my nephew and nieces and took them to show the shop owner expecting her to say, well, keep working on it and one day we will have a silhouette event. But she immediately chose a Saturday only 4 weeks away for me to do silhouettes. When I showed up that day, the line was out the door! I’ve been doing them ever since.”

“One thing I’m also doing a lot of now that stands out with people are the family themes where I hand cut siblings or grandchildren playing together. I make sure each child is proportionate to their siblings or cousins so that it can remind the parent (or whomever) of that time period when they were all little enough to play with each other before that moment is gone so fast. I do a lot of these family themes as a “Family Train” so they can all be tied together in a fun way that works well for a strong design.”

I think one of the most thoughtful and thought provoking gifts one could give or receive for their wedding is artwork. This could kickstart a young couples collection or ignite a passion in them as a couple that they can continue for many years. We are so blessed to have such an artists community here. I’m sharing some of my favorites.

I’m a long time fan of Jill Hooper’s fan portraits and still lifes (I have a portrait by her in my home). Available through Ann Long Fine Art.

John Duckworth‘s landscapes can be seen adorning the walls of some of Charleston’s favorite restaurants and published homes.

Kate Long Stevenson‘s modern figures would be a lovely statement piece in a powder room, dining room, or over a mantle.

Beach scenes are somewhat expected in the Lowcountry, but this one is just really lovely. By Dee Schenck Rhodes through the Charleston Artist Collective.

There are so many color palettes in the abstracts by WayWay Allen it would be easy to find one to fit any home.

Elizabeth O’Neill Verner’s  etchings of Charleston are hauntingly beautiful. A must have for any Charleston connection. Available through Ann Long Fine Art.
