Tara Guerard Soiree by Perry Vaile

We’re asking some of our past brides about teachable moments during their  process, hoping to help anyone else going through the ups and downs of planning now!

What was your favorite part of planning your wedding?

My favorite part in planning was experiencing a world of beautiful, beautiful things. From a few visits to Palmetto Bluff, to tasting
lovely eats for the reception, as a bride, I had no idea I’d be so
warmly invited into an exquisite industry I knew nothing about. And
let me tell you the beautiful world of weddings is pretty epic.

Tara Guerard Soiree by Perry VaileWhat was the biggest challenge during the planning process?

My biggest challenge was managing the process, emotionally. With
heightened bridal senses, small things can feel gargantuan every now
and then.

What do you miss the most now that it is over?

I really, really, really miss the friends I made. From my
photographer turned best friend, Perry Adams of Perry Vaile
Photography, to gown designer, Katherine McDonald, to the rockstar
chick that helped me get dressed, Cacky Rivers from Cacky’s Bride +
Aid, I made lifelong friends.Seriously. I also miss working so closely
with Meg, Tarah, Molly, Abbie, and big T (Tara G) given they kind of
made it happen and we became TIGHT during that wedding planning
process! I wanted to be an easy bride for that incredible team.

Is there anything you would do over and what? Would you wear the same dress?

This sounds bananas, and please feel free to judge me, but I would
shorten our honeymoon from 7 to 5 days (St. Barths was piping hot in
June and we were not prepared). Heck no to the techno I could never
change my dress. I still dream about wearing that awesome frock.
Except now I’m 7 months pregnant, so things fit a little differently.

Can you please give a brief description of your engagement?

During our 11 month engagement, Wyatt and I lived in different
states for job opportunities. He, NY and I, NC. I think this made our
upcoming wedding, to us, even more exciting.

Tara Guerard Soiree by Perry VaileCaroline and Wyatt were married May 30, 2015 at Palmetto Bluff. Stay tuned here to see more lovely details from their Soiree on Wedding Wednesday.

Well, it’s official. Spring will be coming early this year… And, I say that as it is 70 degrees in February here in Charleston. So, for this Wedding Wednesday, I’m pulling this sweet little Spring fling out of the vault to get us all cheery and ready for beautiful days ahead!

This bouquet was a knock out, one of my faves… the chamomile, lily of the valley, lisianthus, and white poppies made for a right out of the garden look.

Letterpressed invitations from Lettered Olive included a jute belly wrap, patterened envelope liner,  and hand calligraphied tags in lieu of inner envelopes.

Guests were greeted at cocktail hour with sweet tea vodka martinis. We had printed little drink flags with the couples’ name printed to adorn the simple glasses for a little added detail.

Guests used classic Polaroid cameras to take candid shots and leave handwritten notes to the couple. This would be an easy, affordable, and memorable “station” anyone could set up for any kind of event!

We always find ourselves using common goods in uncommon ways. Bulk yellow millet (corn meal) was used to give color to trays holding the seating cards, and filled the glass cylinders holding candles which also helped hold them steady.

Burlap topped linens graced the dining tables and the burlap wrapped menu cards complete the earthy elegant look to the dinner.

This deconstructed cake display really worked with the simplicity the bride wanted to portray on her wedding day. Shaved coconut is still such a classic look for a wedding cake – we started seeing it’s popularity in the 60’s and it still holds relevancy today!

After dinner overlooking the marsh, guests made their way to the lounge where they could witness the spectacular sunset on the creek at Kiawah Island and enjoy the rest of the evening.

Tara Guerard Soiree by Liz Banfield

Sharing some dreamy images from Liz Banfield on this Wedding Wednesday. We loved loved working on this wedding, and have since stayed good friends with the family and couple and worked on many other projects together. So, that always makes my job even better, getting to create something for people you really care about! This couple had 1200 people at their wedding so creating a space large enough to accommodate that, yet still have it feel intimate was one of our biggest challenges.

The girls all started with a day of lunch and getting ready at the bride’s family home. The same car that would take the married couple from their ceremony to the reception took the bride and her mother to the church, spending that last bit of time alone together, which is one of my sweetest moments from recent weddings.

The bride’s style was traditional but also super modern. We went with an ice blue and grey color palette. Lots of squared/block shapes, clear acrylic, a modern monogram, and minimalist furniture were all part of the design aesthetic.

The couple were married at her family church, which is a charming historic church in a quaint area of town. The sanctuary was softened with a white carpeted aisle runner and bountiful flowers. The couple was married in front of a lush flower wall that hid much of the acoutremants found on an alter but not necessarily needed at a wedding.

If you can try to carve out any “alone” time to either eat, or just take a breather together as husband and wife, it’s a nice idea that I think you will appreciate after the wedding. This couple rode together alone from the wedding to the reception so they had a chance to discuss the actual wedding.

The reception took place at Boone Hall Plantation. Guests arrived to white gloved treatment from servers lining the walkway with trays of champagne, water, wine, etc. A carpeted aisle was laid, so that women’s shoes wouldn’t sink into the sand as they walked into cocktail hour.

This was a special surprise to the bride and her family. She had bridal portraits taken before the wedding which, as Southern tradition has it, are typically displayed throughout the reception. So, we had these blown up and hung at the entrance to the reception tent surrounded by a massive flower wall.

Edwin McCain (a close friend of the family) sang the Father/Daughter dance song. And, Josh Kelley (one of the couple’s favorite performers) performed for the crowd that evening.

You would have NEVER guessed, but this was the restroom trailer for this reception. With that many guests on the middle of Plantation grounds, we needed a lot of restrooms!  So, instead setting them off to the side as an unfortunate necessity, we glammed them up with draping, chandeliers, lounge furniture to rest your feet or wait in line, and the guest sign in station. We wanted to makes sure that nobody missed the chance to give their well wishes to the couple, and this was a place sure to get the most traction!

With a coincidentally perfectly matrimonial last name like Rice, we couldn’t help but bring that in where we could. So, bowls of rice were used to hold notes containing “Grains of Wisdom” from the guests to the couple.

A cake bar by Jim Smeal was a focal point in one are of the tent- 20 smaller cakes of different flavors were displayed around the centerpiece cutting cake to ensure that guests were all served and a variety of flavors were offered.

Of course, as the couple left, we had to bring in the traditional tossing of the “Rice”. However, wanting to protect the birds that inhabit the natural surroundings, we used Orzo pasta instead!
