Tara Guerard holiday by Lucy Cuneo

Poinsettias have long been associated with Christmas, but I don’t love the oversized awkwardness and the aluminum wrapped pots that make them hard to use on the table as centerpieces. Not wanting these beauties to go overlooked, I’m showing you how to transform the plants into a showstopping centerpiece.

This was bought at the local Harris Teeter, but of course you can use your white or pink varieties as well.

You’ll need “frogs” to support the cut stems. These can be purchased at craft or floral supply stores. They are actually quite handy and good to have on hand for any floral project.

Grab whatever vessel you’re using- could be a sterling silver bowl to a piece of pottery, or even a crystal bowl (put some moss in it to hide the frogs and stems), and place the frogs in the bottom. I needed 4 for this particular bowl. I do suggest keeping it a lower container since the stems, even after trimming, are a larger bloom.

Trim from the plant the fullest blooms or the ones with the nicest leaves and sturdiest stems. Be careful while trimming, as the stems do emit a white milky like substance, but this will stop after a minute or so after cutting. I do like to leave some of the top leaves on the stem, but strip many off them off towards the bottom.

Stick the stems into the frog prongs to keep them upright. Careful not to push too hard, as you’ll bend the stems and will cause a limp. I started with some of the smaller branches around the edges and then filled in the center with the taller more full stems.  Make sure to have some water in the bottom to keep the stems wet.

If you are doing a buffet or longer table piece, or are looking for a little bit more decor to add to your placesettings, I suggest saving the smaller leaves/branches and using small bud vases or vases of varying heights and sizes with just a simple stem in water to add some other arrangements.

Here we placed on each place setting for a nice greeting as guests found their seats.

Tara Guerard Soiree by Adrienne Page

It’s so fun when we get to step outside of weddings and design something festive for our clients.  We headed to the Augusta, Georgia home of some of our former wedding clients, to help them host a holiday soiree swathed in candlelight, winter white flowers, and perfect party foods. Thank you to Adrienne Page for being there with us to capture all of the dets.

This wreath hanging trick ends up being such a lovely decor detail too- if you don’t have a nail or hook in your front door,  wrap ribbon around the top and bottom of the wreath (so that you have it doubled over) and then slide through the top and bottom of the door and tie on the inside of the door.

For a festive touch on the pillar candles leading guests to the front door, we added loose jingle bells.

Luckily the temps hadn’t grown too frigid yet, so guests could enjoy some cozy seating outside. The willow tree was aglow with candle lanterns which made for the most popular hang out spot until the wee hours. That’s what this time of year is all about, gathering those who are important to you and savoring the time together.

Throwing a party in your home is truly my most favorite type of party. The key is to have it open and welcoming, turn on the lights, to use all of the space, and breakout your own linens, china, silver, etc that’s what it’s there for!!!

Tara Guerard Soiree wedding by Liz Banfield

Today we are sharing the wedding of one of the sweetest couples we’ve had the pleasure of working with. The bride planned her wedding in the middle of her second year of law school and while her fiancee was running for a local office and you would never know she had any stress! After attending one of her best friends’ wedding that we planned in Charleston, she asked us to come to her home state of Arkansas, for her New Year’s fete at Marlsgate Plantation. Liz Banfield was with us to capture it all.

Classic blue and white was an early design decision made since the bride hade an affinity for Carolyne Roehme. We also knew we wanted to approach the wedding from more of an interior design perspective than a wedding design perspective. We were lucking enough to scout the perfect fabric that kicked off the design theme and we used that throughout including wrapping the bride’s bouquet. To give it an even more tailored look, we added blue fabric buttons.

We, along with Lettered Olive, really enjoyed working on all of the printing… The guest welcome bags were custom made shoe bags so that guests could travel home with them, full of local Mountain Valley Spring Water, mini blue champagne splits, and bags of rice produced by the bride’s father’s business.

We were so fortunate with the weather, it had rained and rained for days leading up to the wedding, and then on the big day, the sun just came out and shone. This looks like it could be a summer day in Charleston, but it was 40 degrees and wet! We had to wrap our sweet bride up in between photos to get warm again. P.S. her Carolina Herrera dress was unbelievable and literally looked as if it was custom made for her. Pleats of silk faille ran the length of the dress, but it still flowed so light, loved loved loved it.

After the ceremony at a local historic church, the guests gathered for a tented affair on the plantation grounds. A framed fabric covered board held all of the caligraphied escort cards for dinner, and a fabric covered box we crafted for guests to drop notes they wrote to the couple.

The dining room at this wedding was really magical. There were so many candles glowing in the room and the white carpeting really transformed it into that “winter wonderland” feeling. The linens were white suede with thick blue roping along the bottom. They draped on the tables so beautifully and made the perfect palette for the blue and white china. But, a scene stealer were the wrought iron chandeliers that were part of the plantation property. We loved that we were able to hang them in the tent and use real candles with them.

Abundant centerpieces of garden roses made the room naturally fragrant… the letterpressed menu cards were slipped inside printed folders that were used for the save the dates and welcome booklets and were then caligraphied with each guests name.

Champagne was passed as dinner was ending to accompany the cake cutting. The detail on this wedding cake was amazing, such a centerpiece of the room!

The after dinner lounge was an amazing hang out for the guests. We did a woven checkerboard ceiling in the wedding colors, and had the coziest gold suede furniture throughout. Custom pillows were made from that same awesome blue and white fabric.

The couple opted for a traditional send off of a rice toss (for obviously family business reasons). We hand stamped muslin bags with the couples’ monogram, we really loved how these turned out.
