Spring is finally blooming! Of course, one of the biggest things brides consider (or should consider) when choosing when they would like to marry, and what they would like to carry is the season. Many popular blooms can be available almost year round from various international farms, but some flowers are specific to the season in which they grow. Of course one of the most coveted Spring blooms is the lily of the valley. Carried on their own or as an accent, I can’t think of a Spring flower that says “bridal” more.

Depending on the weather here in Charleston, we can source some really beautiful gardenias early and hydrangeas in late Spring. Both can be a bit tricky to use in wedding flowers though since they love water. But, if it’s not too hot of a day and you ask your florist to have backups on standby, using them as boutonierres or in bouquets can be a beautiful addition.  Be careful with touching the gardenias too much because that can brown them quickly.

The idea of seeing colors and textures of the season mixed together make for a really lovely design palette. I think of color blends like pale greens, blues, and purples; or pastels with pops of brights.  Lilacs, sweet peas, and tulips come together for a colorful and fragrant but not overpowering mix.

For a bride wanting to stay all white in the spring- this blend of peonies, sweet peas, and ranunculus is so picture perfect.

Bright color blends are totally perfect making their debut at spring weddings. Corals, pinks, peaches, blend for a bright but sophisticated look. Then, there are the branches, of course. Cherry blossom branches, pear blossom branches, azaleas, dogwoods, etc are all glorious blooms that we use whenever we can get!  The statement pieces used throughout this wedding included oversized pots full of pink hydrangea and sprouting branches.

I found this chart years ago on Pinterest as to the meaning of specific flowers and even broken down by color in some cases- it’s a great reference tool if you want to compile a bouquet with meaning or to display a certain sentiment.

I’m so thrilled to introduce three of my favorite “bespoke” companies or makers with you today. Especially if you have an upcoming wedding, these are definitely new and interesting pieces you could have for your big day. First up is Mariee Lace Veils.  Fellow Southerners, they import hand crafted lace veils directly from Belgium.  They are known for their handcrafted “Princess” lace, a tradition that started with the Royal family using in their clothing and accessories and became collectible heirlooms after being handed down for many generations. The owner of Mariee has been the fourth bride in modern times to wear their family’s veils. I love this heirloom idea!  And society brides like Alexis Brinkley have made these veils a part of their wedding day.

They also import handmade hankies of the same lace.  This lily of the valley is so amazing.. How fabulous would it be to carry while carrying a bouquet of lily of the valley. This is also something I could see being amazing shower hostess gifts, or also bridesmaids gifts. So perfect especially if not all of the girls are married yet and they are getting something they will be able to incorporate into their future wedding day.

And, they have now started selling prints of the owner’s botanical water color paintings (and look for her new book on these due out in this fall) based on her travels and love for gardening. How perfect it would be to have one to match the wedding day bouquet and have guests sign a matted version (in lieu of a guest book) to then hang at home. Next, I’d like to introduce Hallie Seibels Portraiture Consultant. Hallie works with you to find one of her many artists that fits your style and personality. And, she manages the process for you from start to finish. All of the costs, deadlines, and communications.  I have used her for the portraits of all three of my children, but she also represents many bridal portrait artists. I just absolutely love the idea of a hand painted portrait of a bride.. such a southern tradition, and something that you can look back on to remember that day.

Finally, artist Chloe Strickland .  We have had Chloe at a couple of our recent weddings painting scenes like the most recent, first dance, and also the bride and groom at dinner. While I know this isn’t a new thing, but I’m loving the trend of weddings being more personal and meaningful, and this would be a great way to create something unforgettable from your wedding day. I’d rather splurge here and have a lovely piece of artwork for my home for later than on two dresses, or an after party!

I was so honored when asked to participate in the 2017 Paris edition of the Inner Circle Experience, not only to connect and collaborate with old and new friends in the industry, but I was also hungry for some inspiration. We are lucky enough to travel all over doing weddings for clients who are from all over, but nothing compares to stepping outside of that and seeing new things to inspire you in a new host of ways…

We stayed at the Plaza de Athenee which was beyond luxurious… I think staying in hotels is one of the things that provides me with the most inspiration and have always dreamed of designing a hotel one day… I try on my visits to our NYC office to try new places, but I tend to fall in love with a place and stay there for a while before switching it up…

Walking around and exploring doors is one of my most favorite things to do… Last year after exploring doors in Italy, I came home and painting my front door a color that I couldn’t get out of my head. And, we have done a lovely wedding where the bride loved a particular door knocker and we incorporated it throughout the design.
My friend and fellow event professional, Ceci Johnson of Ceci New York, and I wandering the streets together…

I was thrilled that the Dior exhibit at the Musee des Art Decoratifs was happening while I was there… I was in awe, it was breathtaking… So many dresses I would give anything to have in my collection, and so many I could see as fabulous wedding dresses!

Of course, just absorbing all of the surroundings could take up your entire trip. I’m more of a culture buff than architecture, but I couldn’t help being overwhelmed by all there was to see.

The ceiling here of the Palais Garnier is spectacular, just the detail and time it must have taken to go into it… And, you can rent this space for events, I can just see designing a wedding here- add to goal list!

Sometimes you just have to do the one obvious tourist thing, for me going to the top of the Eifel Tower was incredible…

The view from the top was spectacular.. We had lunch at the Jules Verne restaurant, and I even got to witness the cutest couple sitting next to me get engaged! Could not have been more perfect.
There were incredible experiences lined up for us… Some of my favorites were perusing the Picasso Museum, the cooking class at Alain Ducasse’s Le’Ecole de Cuisine , and going to the original Hermes store. It’s always been a dream of mine to live in Paris for the summer to go the Le Cordon Bleu, so a glimpse of this at the Alain Ducasse school reignited that even more. This is why Paris is called the City of Lights!
