Drayton Hall House

With Halloween less than a week away, I thought it appropriate to share my top “haunts” here in the historically Haunted city of Charleston, SC. Many if not all of these are open or available to the public for tours or viewing, so see for yourself if you dare.

1. Drayton Hall Plantation– not only is it a landmark under the National Trust for Historic Preservation (built in the mid 1700’s) and the fully executable example of Palladian architecture in the country, it’s rumored to have some permanent residents. I can speak from experience having done many many weddings here with breakdown lasting well into the late morning hours, there are some spooky sights and sounds, my staff can attest to this as well!

2. Old City Jail (photo from nps.gov)

Built in 1802, the old Charleston County jail housed pirates, bank robbers, and the famed female serial killer, Lavinia Fisher until it closed in 1939. Now a part of the American College of Building Arts, it hosts tons of art events, fundraising parties, and ghost tours. We did a big bash here years ago, and it was super creep! You can hear all sorts of sounds and definitely get that hair on the back of your neck standing up feeling when you end up in some of the old rooms.

3. St. Philip’s Church (painting by Patsy Tidwell)

This is my home church, so the haunted story here is one you’l have to decide for yourself.  But every ghost tour in town stops at the gates of our cemetery to recount the story of Sue Howard Hardy and the photo that an amateur photographer took…

4. Blind Tiger Pub

Legend has it that the former speakeasy during Prohibition, hosts a few ghosts. One bar regular reported her hair being pulled from behind, and a bar manager recounted hearing footsteps crunching leaves in the rear patio area. One former general manager was closing up for the night, and had two of his friends sitting at a nearby table as he did so. All three saw the appearance of a woman wearing black walk through the area, only to disappear. More from ghostwriter James Caskey here.

5. Dock Street Theater (photo by the Keadle Group)

Home to Charleston Stage, and many Spoleto performances now, the original Dock Street Theater building was once the Planter’s Hotel, the home of gambling and prostitution for Charleston’s one time elite gentlemen and those visiting our port of call.  One of the ghosts rumored to haunt this spot is a former “worker” Nettie Dickerson. You can read lots about Nettie and other rumored ghost Junius Booth all over the internet.

Happy Halloween from Charleston!

ceremony:sunlight

This breathtaking ceremony took place under the oaks at Drayton Hall Plantation. This bride was all about glamour and wanted a modern flair for her southern plantation affair. So, we added luxe details including chandeliers covered with spanish moss dripping from the branches of the old oak overlooking the pond. Swaths of orchid blooms draped along the aisle runner of plush white carpet.  An arch of floral covered branches in footed urns framed the spot where the couple tied the knot.

Great little takeaway for upcoming and future brides- have all of your bridesmaids sign the bottom of your wedding shoes, and the first name to rub off will be the next to get married.  The guest welcome bags were canvas shoe bags (which made it easy for out of town guests to take home) filled with hotel room essentials, including a “Charleston” candle by Archipelago.  This braid/bun combo was a bridal hair showstopper!

flower girl aisle couple and dogs

This couple made a great point of including loved ones on the big day- Small nieces acted as flower girls, and the couple’s two golden retrievers made a guest appearance for photos.

After the ceremony, guests walked the grounds of Drayton Hall towards the riverbanks where they entered a cocktail tent full of plush lounge furniture, candlelight and chandeliers.

Lettered Olive was loving being able to mix up materials for this bride- the menu cards, escort cards, and table names were all etched acrylic signs. In lieu of a guest book, guests were asked to take a polaroid photo and write a note which went in a box for the couple to have at home..

lounge overall

After dinner, guests entered an all white and silver swank lounge for dancing. It had been sealed off during dinner, so the big reveal really wowed the guests. The Casablanca lilies used in the centerpieces filled the room with their scent which was an unplanned but pleasant surprise detail!

Inexpensive and comfy asian slippers took place of flip flops for guests needing to change out of their high heels. This mod octagon shimmering cake by Jim Smeal was definitely a stand alone centerpiece. Guests not wanting to indulge at the party, were given slices in boxes that they could take home with them.

Intimate seating lining the edges of the dance floor allowed for cozy conversation and quick break to rest!

Silly String collage

Having a fun couple allows us to get really creative, which is of course, fun for us. For the send off, everyone “Got Silly at Hilary and Will’s Wedding” with custom covered silly string cans.

getaway car

The vintage getaway car was adorned with paper flowers in the brides’ colors. Loved the throwback to weddings when decorating the car was a really big deal!
Thank you to Liz Banfield for all of the gorgeous shots!

Strang Bride by Adrienne Page

This sweet sunny soiree from the vault is perfect for this Wedding Wednesday. The yellow, white, and green is just the bright color pattern needed for the midweek slump. This wedding was even more special for us since we had done the bride’s older sister’s wedding a couple of years before. She wore a fabulous eyelet Caroline Herrera ballgown, which we just had to incorporate into the wedding decor as well.

Strang flowers and paper

The brides’ bouquet, full of lush greenery and white blooms like ranunculus, lily of the valley, clematis, and fluffy listianthus was wrapped with eyelet fabric to match the brides’ gown.  Her letterpress invitation suite designed by Lettered Olive, had a cheery yellow and white wrap in lieu of inner envelopes.

Guest welcome “pails” were full of local treats, waters, and necessities like bug spray, sunscreen, etc. all adorned with custom stickers and packaging.

Ceremony Collage

To create an “alter” for the wedding ceremony, we hung hand made yellow banners with white floral patterns from the branches of the old Live Oak tree. The Drayton Hall home made an amazing backdrop for the wedding.

Cocktail Hour Collage

We always have umbrellas or back up plans for outdoor ceremonies, and thank goodness, because there were some quick showers at this one! At cocktail hour, guests enjoyed lemonade cocktails.

The eyelet pattern was carefully woven into the tent decor which glowed with a soft yellow and white ambience all evening.
