gift-closet

Getting organized for the new year takes some serious effort and dedication, and after the holidays the gift closet was one of the biggest spaces to take a hit. The photo above is from Southern Living, and sadly not from my own gift closet, but it’s important to note that a gift closet is something that can make your life so much easier if kept properly. I’ve been working on cleaning mine out a bit and have come up with a list of my favorite things to help you start or re-stock your own.

scissors-and-ribbon

For starters, it’s very important to have good ribbon and scissors for wrapping your gifts. We love this velvet ribbon from M&J Trimming, and these beautiful brass scissors from The Apartment by The Line.

surcie-tags

And as you’re wrapping, you can’t go wrong with lovely letterpress “Surcie” tags by Lettered Olive. They give a subtle message and make your gift look polished and well thought out.

rewined-candles-2

I love giving local gifts, and Charleston-made Rewined Candles are always a hit. Made from recycled wine bottles with scents like “Champange” and “Pinot Noir,” they feel festive and are good for the environment.

wine

Speaking of wine, a nice bottle of your favorite vintage is always appreciated. I keep extra bottles of my favorites in the gift closet so I can easily grab them for a dinner party, and to complete the gift, I wrap them in our Lettered Olive wine bags and include a stainless steel vacuum wine stopper for keeping the bottle fresh. Better than a brown paper bag by far!

thank yous2

Our mothers always taught us the magic of the words “Please” and “Thank you.” Around the holidays those words can go a long way, especially when used in a note of a appreciation for someone that has gone out of their way for you during this busy season. Ancient Egyptians wrote versions of thank you notes on pieces papyrus, but since postage stamps became readily available around 1840, their popularity has spread. During that time period, stores began selling printed notes with artwork on them and the thank you note as we know it was born, but of course we especially love the personalized note cards by Lettered Olive pictured here.

thank yous1

We love the idea of using a quieter week like this one to pause and say thank you to someone who has gone out of their way to help you during the holidays. A brief note is a simple, yet very meaningful way to express your gratitude. Here are a few tips:

1. Write the note by hand, on good paper or better yet, personalized stationery.

2. The salutation should be short and heartfelt.  Don’t say “Dear Cassandra” if she’s not a close friend.  Just say “Cassandra” and follow it with a dash or comma.

3. The body of the note begins with a simple expression of gratitude.  “Thank you for the lovely salad set.”  If you can follow it with a sentence spelling out how you plan to use or enjoy the gift, even better.  “I look forward to using it next time I entertain someone I’m trying to impress.”

4. Close with a friendly, informal farewell, something like, “Best wishes for the New Year,” or, “Look forward to seeing you in the New Year.”

5. And then write, “Fondly,”or “Warmly,” or “Best,” followed by your signature.

An envelope, a stamp, a mad search for an address, and you’re done!  The rewards will outweigh the effort a hundredfold, and you may even get another, better gift next year!

We always love staying in touch with our brides after the big day is over, and a few months ago we shared a baby announcement Lettered Olive created for a Soirée bride.  We’re so happy to share a baby shower invitation today… this time for twins! And of course we can’t go without including some photos from the couple’s wedding we did in 2011. Congratulations to the beautiful family!

Wedding

Labeling the bottles this way keeps them organized, but creates a cohesive look for your bar and of course lets the wine breath! The photos for this wedding were taken by the lovely Adrienne Page and Gayle Brooker.

Wedding

We used beautiful pink peonies in bud vases to create our table assignment cards. Bonus… when the guests took them to their table they formed an additional centerpiece!

Wedding

A warm palette of taupes, gold, and rose made for a very romantic table setting, and the glow of the candlelight set a festive mood.

Here’s our beautiful bride from behind… look at all of that gorgeous tulle! And you can make out a few of the fun details in the back of this photo including drum shade chandeliers, string globe lights, and a beautiful scalloped border on the tent.

Wedding

This many candles creates such a statement on the table, and we mixed the candleholder styles for a collected look. See the peonies from the table assignments?! They fit in perfectly. Such a fun celebration!
