I’m so thrilled to introduce three of my favorite “bespoke” companies or makers with you today. Especially if you have an upcoming wedding, these are definitely new and interesting pieces you could have for your big day. First up is Mariee Lace Veils.  Fellow Southerners, they import hand crafted lace veils directly from Belgium.  They are known for their handcrafted “Princess” lace, a tradition that started with the Royal family using in their clothing and accessories and became collectible heirlooms after being handed down for many generations. The owner of Mariee has been the fourth bride in modern times to wear their family’s veils. I love this heirloom idea!  And society brides like Alexis Brinkley have made these veils a part of their wedding day.

They also import handmade hankies of the same lace.  This lily of the valley is so amazing.. How fabulous would it be to carry while carrying a bouquet of lily of the valley. This is also something I could see being amazing shower hostess gifts, or also bridesmaids gifts. So perfect especially if not all of the girls are married yet and they are getting something they will be able to incorporate into their future wedding day.

And, they have now started selling prints of the owner’s botanical water color paintings (and look for her new book on these due out in this fall) based on her travels and love for gardening. How perfect it would be to have one to match the wedding day bouquet and have guests sign a matted version (in lieu of a guest book) to then hang at home. Next, I’d like to introduce Hallie Seibels Portraiture Consultant. Hallie works with you to find one of her many artists that fits your style and personality. And, she manages the process for you from start to finish. All of the costs, deadlines, and communications.  I have used her for the portraits of all three of my children, but she also represents many bridal portrait artists. I just absolutely love the idea of a hand painted portrait of a bride.. such a southern tradition, and something that you can look back on to remember that day.

Finally, artist Chloe Strickland .  We have had Chloe at a couple of our recent weddings painting scenes like the most recent, first dance, and also the bride and groom at dinner. While I know this isn’t a new thing, but I’m loving the trend of weddings being more personal and meaningful, and this would be a great way to create something unforgettable from your wedding day. I’d rather splurge here and have a lovely piece of artwork for my home for later than on two dresses, or an after party!

One thing still holds firm with many of our weddings we do throughout the South, and that’s tradition.  Many Southern brides have well known or tried and true traditions that we work to incorporate, and other times it varies by region or state and may not be as well known. We wanted to break it down for you in case you are looking for a little way to incorporate tradition into your upcoming wedding.  One that is definitely big with our Dallas brides is having a “house party”. A house party is essentially a second wedding party, your best girlfriends, sorority sisters, etc that wear special attire and sit up front, participate in all of the bridal party activities, but it just cuts back on the big number of people standing up front with the couple.

Another popular trend that actually seems to get the guys excited and on board- burying the bourbon.  The folklore states that if you bury a bottle upside down in the ground, it won’t rain on your wedding day.

I have to say it worked out pretty well for this couple… it was a gorgeous day for them.

This one has seemed to spread beyond just being a Southern thing, but we have our fair share of groom’s cakes on display still.  Usually the design is something sports related- like a favorite college or pro team, or maybe something related to a profession. Or, a favorite food or something from a movie or tv show. Whatever it may be, take that as a chance to put a custom mark on it.

Another classic Southern wedding tradition is displaying the bride’s portrait somewhere at the wedding. It used to be just on an easel or in a frame on a table positioned somewhere near where everyone enters, but we try to do something different with it so that it can become a design moment.  For a wedding at Lowndes Grove Plantation we took down a painting and hung up one of our bride.  For another wedding, we blew up the photos and hung them at the tent entrance as part of a floral wall, all as a surprise for our bride…

The debate has been around as long as I have been planning weddings- kids or no kids?  Of course, we roll with whatever is the best plan for our clients, but if you are a little hesitant about including peanuts, maybe some of these ideas will help you feel more confident about having kids at the wedding.  And, head over Vogue.com for more kid friendly ideas from some of our event colleagues.

As mentioned in the Vogue.com article, I think kids in a ceremony are adorable. It’s not about whether they make it down the aisle perfectly or not, and it definitely helps take the pressure of the bride. Sometimes, having a parent in the wedding party that one can walk to or with or older flower girls can be a big help in keeping the tiniest ones comfortable.

Once at the reception- whether it’s a seated dinner or station/buffet style we suggest have a separate seating area for the kids. Not only does this help save money on the fancy table decor you may be doing for the other tables, but also gives the parents a chance to relax and enjoy conversation. You could have preset family style meals for the kids too… Full tummies always help keep the kiddos on track.

We like to do special boxes or gift bags for the kids, full of snacks and games and activities.  If your venue has the space for it, we’ve often hired babysitters to come and be with all of the kids in a separate area. They are still close by for the parents to check on them but under other adult supervision.
